Custom WordPress website design for small business: what you’re actually buying

What custom really means, what to check before you commission, and where the budget goes

Most established businesses don’t come to a website conversation because they want a website. They come because something has stopped working. The enquiries have thinned out, or the site is three years behind what the business now sells, or every small content change turns into a week of chasing someone. Custom WordPress website design for a small business is usually the answer that gets suggested, and it’s often the right one. But “custom” covers a wide range of things, and the difference between them decides whether you end up with an asset or another thing to manage.

Why so many Australian businesses land on WordPress

WordPress dominates in the industries where established businesses operate, and the pattern holds across very different sectors. The RADAR Digital Index, Redfox’s benchmark of Australian and New Zealand businesses, found WordPress running 92.9% of the websites of 493 Australian engineering and construction businesses in Q3 2026. In the same quarter it ran 70.5% of 556 home and trade services businesses and 68.2% of 541 specialist healthcare businesses.

That matters for a practical reason. You’re not betting on a platform that might disappear, and you’re not locked to one supplier who holds the only key. There are developers who know it, plugins for most common requirements, and a path to move your site elsewhere if a relationship ends. For an owner weighing up risk, that counts for more than any feature list.

What “custom” means

Custom sits between two things you’ve probably already seen. At one end there’s a theme bought off a marketplace and filled in with your content, which is fast and cheap and looks like several thousand other sites. At the other end there’s a bespoke application built from nothing, which is expensive and unnecessary for a business that mainly needs to explain what it does and capture enquiries.

Custom WordPress design means the structure, the pages and the content types are built around how your business sells. Your service pages are shaped by the questions buyers ask, not by whatever the theme’s demo content assumed. Your case studies become a content type with fields your team fills in, so nobody rebuilds a page by hand each time. The admin is set up so a marketing coordinator can publish without opening a support ticket.

If every small content change turns into a week of chasing someone, that’s a decision someone made about who the site was built for. We see it often enough to name it. Businesses choose a platform or a build approach on what looks impressive in a demo, then discover the day-to-day cost six months later. Lance put it directly when we asked what goes wrong most:

“Picking a CMS without thinking about who’s going to use it every day.”

What to check before you commission anything

Who will use it every week

Ask who in your business will publish, edit and add pages, and how often. Then ask whoever is quoting to show you how those specific tasks work in the build they’re proposing. If the answer involves a developer for anything beyond text edits, you’ve found your future bottleneck. A good custom build makes the common jobs easy and accepts that the rare ones need help.

What happens to your enquiries

A form that submits successfully and goes nowhere useful is a common fault. Decide early where an enquiry needs to land: an inbox, a CRM, a notification to the right person. Then confirm it’s in the scope, tested, with someone named as responsible. This is where CRM integration and automation belongs in the conversation, because routing an enquiry into your systems is separate work from designing the page the form sits on.

Whether the content exists

Most website projects run late because of content, not code. Be honest about whether you have the case studies, the service explanations and the photography, or whether someone needs to produce them. If the answer is produce, that’s content strategy and copywriting and it belongs in the scope and the timeline before week six arrives.

What you own at the end

You should hold the hosting account, the domain and administrator access, and you should be able to take the site to another developer. Ask the question plainly. Any reputable supplier will give you a straight answer, and the answer tells you a lot about how the relationship will run.

If every small content change turns into a week of chasing someone, that’s a decision someone made about who the site was built for.

Where the money goes

At Redfox, new custom WordPress builds start from $8,000 + GST. A custom build costs more than a theme because of the thinking in front of the design hours: working out who the site is for, what they need to understand before they’ll enquire, and what proof makes them confident. Design and development then carry that decision through.

A theme build fits your content to a template, while a custom build shapes the structure, content types, editing experience and enquiry routing around the business. Spend goes further when the site is built to be extended. A business that adds two service lines a year shouldn’t need a rebuild to accommodate them.

How a build usually runs

The sequence matters more than the duration, and the duration depends on your content and your approval process. Discovery comes first: who buys, what they ask and what currently gets in the way. Then the structure, which sets the pages, the journeys and the content types the site needs. Design shapes how a visitor moves from arriving to enquiring, and the WordPress build implements it with templates, fields, forms and the agreed integrations. Launch covers testing, tracking, enquiry routing and training the people who will use the thing. Each stage is harder to fix once the next one starts, which is why the structure decision deserves more of your attention than the colour palette.

Reviews send people to your site, so the site has to hold up when they arrive. In a 2026 US survey by BrightLocal, 54% of consumers said they visit a business’s website after reading positive reviews, up from 32% when the question was last asked in 2019. Our own Google rating is 5.0 from 42 reviews, and that traffic still has to land somewhere that explains the work properly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom WordPress website cost for a small business?

New custom WordPress builds at Redfox start from $8,000 + GST. The final figure depends on the number of page templates, the content types involved and any integrations with your CRM or other systems.

Is WordPress still a good choice in 2026?

Yes. The RADAR Digital Index found WordPress running 92.9% of the websites of 493 Australian engineering and construction businesses in Q3 2026, with similar dominance in home and trade services and specialist healthcare.

Can we edit a custom WordPress site ourselves?

Yes, if it’s built for that. Ask your developer to demonstrate the exact tasks your team does most, because a build can be custom and still leave you dependent on them for routine changes.

Do we need a full rebuild or can we improve what we have?

You can often improve what you have. A rebuild makes sense when the structure no longer matches how the business sells, or the platform can’t carry what you need next.

The first thing to settle

Before you ask anyone for a quote, write down the two or three things a visitor must understand before they’ll contact you, and the names of the people in your business who will update the site. Those two lists shape the brief more than any feature wishlist, and they’ll expose quickly whether a supplier is designing for your business or for their portfolio.

Redfox Digital is a Sydney-based digital growth agency. We’ve been building WordPress sites for established businesses for more than 20 years, and we start by finding where growth is getting stuck before assuming a rebuild is the answer.
